I work with autistic students on reading, writing, English language and academic skills. Lessons begin with the individual student’s interests, strengths and goals.
- Clear instructions: explain the task directly, work through an example and check that the expectations make sense.
- Reading and interpretation: discuss vocabulary, context, figurative language and the evidence for an interpretation.
- Writing: organize ideas, develop a paragraph and make connections explicit for the reader.
- A workable pace: agree on the focus of the lesson and adjust the time spent on each activity.
Students differ in how they prefer to communicate and work. Please tell me about useful routines, preferred ways of learning and any school strategies you would like us to take into account.
